Discounts
What it does
Discounts lets you reward returning customers and run promotions. There are two tools: Discount Cards, which are loyalty cards you hand out to regular customers with a fixed discount rate on chosen categories, and Discount Coupons, which are single codes (like "SUMMER20") that give a percentage off the whole order, a category, a subcategory, or one specific item, optionally limited by date or number of uses. Both are applied by staff at the payment screen and show up as a separate line on the receipt.
Getting started
- An admin turns on the Discounts feature for your venue in Settings, if it isn't already on.
- Go to Discounts in the side menu — you'll see Cards and Coupons as two separate sections.
- To create a loyalty card: open Cards, tap Add Card, give it a name (e.g. "VIP Card") and, optionally, the customer's name, email, and phone so staff can find it later. Add one or more discount conditions — for example "20% off Drinks" or a catch-all rate that applies to everything if you don't add any category-specific conditions.
- To create a coupon: open Coupons, tap Add Coupon, give it a name and a code customers will use (e.g. "SUMMER20") — at least 5 characters, letters and numbers only, and it can't match any other coupon's code. Tap the generate button next to the code field to build one automatically from the name, the discount, and what it applies to. Set the discount percentage (1–100%) and choose what the coupon applies to — the whole order, one category, one subcategory, or one specific menu item.
- Optionally set a maximum number of uses, a limit on how many matching items in one check it can discount ("Positions per check"), and/or a start and expiry date for the coupon — leave them blank for a card or coupon with no limits.
- Save. The card or coupon is active immediately unless you leave it unchecked.
- At checkout, open the payment window and tap Discount. Pick a loyalty card by searching the customer's name, phone, or email, and/or type in a coupon code and tap Apply. You can use a card and one or more coupons on the same order, as long as they don't both try to discount the same item. Once you've picked what you want, tap Apply at the bottom of the Discount window to save it to the order — or tap Cancel (or the ×) to back out without changing anything.
- Confirm and take payment as usual. If you applied a card and one or more coupons, each one appears as its own line — on the printed bill preview and on the final receipt — not merged into a single discount amount.
Key things to know
- A loyalty card can have several discount conditions, each targeting a category, a subcategory, or "all items." If you don't add any conditions, the card won't apply a discount.
- A coupon always applies a single percentage discount, scoped to the whole order, one category, one subcategory, or one specific item — pick the scope when you create it.
- Each card and each coupon can be turned off ("Active" toggle) instead of deleted, so you can pause it and turn it back on later without losing its history.
- Some menu items can be marked "non-discountable" in the catalog — if an item has that tag, no card or coupon will ever discount it, even if it's included in the category or scope.
- Add-ons (modifiers) usually aren't discounted by a loyalty card. A stand-alone add-on on the order — like an "Extra cheese" line — is skipped by card discounts unless it's marked Eligible for card discount in the catalog. Even then, a card only discounts it through an "all items" rate, since add-ons aren't tied to a category.
- A coupon can only affect a given item once per order — if two coupons would both discount the same item, the second one is rejected the moment you try to apply it, with a message that it conflicts.
- A coupon is rejected the moment you try to apply it only in two cases: it's tied to one specific menu item that isn't on the order, or it would discount items an already-applied coupon has claimed. A coupon scoped to a whole category, subcategory, or the entire order is accepted even if nothing matching is on the check yet — it simply won't take anything off until you add a matching item, exactly like it would on the final receipt.
- Opening the Discount window doesn't commit anything by itself. Picking a card, typing a coupon, or removing a coupon only takes effect once you tap Apply at the bottom of the window. Tapping Cancel or the × throws away everything you changed in that window and puts the order back exactly as it was.
- When tax is added on top of the price (not already included), a card or coupon lowers the amount tax is calculated on as well as the price itself — so the total drops by a bit more than the discount percentage alone would suggest. This matches what's printed on the pre-bill and the final receipt, so the numbers always agree.
- Coupons with a start date won't work before that date, and ones with an expiry date stop working after it. Coupons with a maximum number of uses stop working once that limit is reached.
- A coupon code must be at least 5 characters, letters and numbers only (no spaces), and can't match any other coupon's code — the form checks this as you type. Use the generate button next to the code field to build one automatically from the coupon's name, its discount, and what it applies to.
- You can cap how many matching items on a single check a coupon may discount ("Positions per check") — useful for a "first two free" style offer that shouldn't quietly cover a whole table's order. Each discounted item also counts as one use toward the coupon's overall usage limit, so applying a coupon to two portions of the same dish in one order uses up two of its allowed uses, not one.
- A coupon switches itself off automatically the moment it reaches its usage limit, so it stops showing as active. Raise the limit (or just re-enable it) to bring it back.
- A discount percentage on a card or coupon must be between 1% and 100%.
- If a discount or coupon brings a check's total all the way to zero, it can still be closed at the payment window with a single tap — see Orders.
- Tap the usage button on a loyalty card's row in the Cards list to see its usage in a popup — the total amount it has discounted and the list of orders it was used on.
- If your venue also uses Clients, a loyalty card can be issued straight from a customer's profile there and shows a small Client badge in the Cards list. Its name, email, and phone are copied in from the client at the moment the card is issued, so the card keeps working even if you rename the client afterward — and deleting the client removes their card too.
- A card linked to a client is applied automatically once you attach that customer to an order. Instead of searching for the card at the payment screen, a cashier picks who the order is for (⋯ More → Client on the register) and, if that customer holds an active card, its discount is on the check immediately. See Orders.
- Reports include a Discounts & Vouchers section showing how often each card or coupon was used and how much it saved customers in total.
- Only managers (or staff with the right permission) can create, edit, or delete cards and coupons. Applying a discount at checkout needs its own separate permission, so a venue can let cashiers use existing cards/coupons without letting them create new ones.
- If you apply more than one coupon, each one gets its own line — in the running total on screen, on the printed bill preview, and on the final receipt — so it's always clear which coupon took off how much.
- A card or coupon applied to an order stays visible the whole time the order is open — on the register screen, in Active Orders, and afterward in Order History — including which specific items it discounted, not just the running total.
FAQ
Q: What's the difference between a discount card and a coupon?
A: A card is a reusable loyalty card tied to one customer, with its own set of per-category discount rates, meant to be used again and again. A coupon is a single code with one percentage discount and an optional scope, expiry date, and usage limit — meant for time-limited promotions.
Q: Can I use a card and a coupon on the same order?
A: Yes. You can apply one loyalty card and one or more coupons to the same order, as long as they don't try to discount the exact same item — in that case the second discount is blocked.
Q: Can the same coupon code be used twice on one order?
A: No, applying the same code twice is blocked automatically.
Q: What happens once a coupon reaches its usage limit?
A: It switches itself off automatically and stops working — staff trying to apply it see a message that the usage limit has been reached. Each discounted item counts separately toward that limit, not each order, so applying a coupon to two portions of the same dish in one order uses up two of its allowed uses.
Q: Can I stop a card or coupon from being used without deleting it?
A: Yes, switch off its "Active" toggle. It stays in your list with its history intact and can be reactivated later.
Q: Why won't a coupon apply to a specific item even though it's in the right category?
A: That item may be marked as non-discountable in the catalog. Items with that tag never receive a discount, from either a card or a coupon.
Q: Why isn't the loyalty card discounting an add-on like extra cheese?
A: Add-ons (modifiers) are left out of card discounts by default. To include one, mark that modifier Eligible for card discount in Menu → Modifiers. It will then be discounted by a card's "all items" rate — but a rate that targets only a category or subcategory still won't reach it, because an add-on has no category of its own.
Q: How do I find out how much a specific loyalty card has saved a customer?
A: Open the card in the Cards list and tap its usage button — a popup shows the total amount discounted and every order the card was used on.
Q: Who can create or edit cards and coupons?
A: Only staff with the right management permission, which is usually restricted to managers. Regular cashiers can typically apply an existing card or coupon at checkout but not create new ones — your admin controls who has each permission.
Q: If I apply two coupons to the same order, do they show up as one combined discount?
A: No — each coupon that took something off gets its own line, in the order summary, on the printed pre-check, and on the final receipt, so you can always see which coupon discounted what.
Q: I applied a coupon on the register screen — will it still show once the order becomes an open check I come back to later?
A: Yes. Once applied, a card or coupon stays attached to the order and its discount keeps showing — in the running total, per item, and in the summary — for as long as the order is open, and it's still there afterward in Order History.
Q: I typed in a coupon code and got a message that it has no effect — what does that mean?
A: This shows up in two situations: the coupon is tied to one specific menu item and that item isn't on the order, or another coupon you've already applied has claimed the same items. A coupon for a whole category, subcategory, or the whole order is always accepted, even if nothing matching it is on the check yet — it just won't discount anything until you add a matching item. The system checks the item- and conflict-based cases the moment you apply the code, so you find out right away and can remove or swap the coupon before you take payment.
Q: Why is my total a bit lower than I expected after applying a discount, when tax is added on top of the price?
A: A discount also lowers the amount tax is calculated on, not just the item price. So the total drops by slightly more than the discount percentage alone — the tax on the discounted-away portion is removed too. The printed pre-bill and the final receipt both reflect this, so what the customer sees always matches what they're charged.
Q: I typed a coupon in the payment window, then closed it without paying. Will it still apply?
A: It depends on whether you already printed a pre-bill with it. If you haven't, closing the payment window without taking payment discards the coupon — enter it again when you're ready to charge. But if you printed a pre-bill that showed the coupon and its discounted total, reopening the payment window keeps the coupon in place, so the guest is never charged more than the slip in their hand says. Once a discount has been printed and handed to the guest, it stays on the order until you remove it yourself or take the payment.
Q: I picked a card or typed a coupon in the Discount window, then tapped Cancel — did it still apply?
A: No. Cancel (and closing the window with the ×) throws away anything you changed in that window — card and coupons both — and restores the discount the order already had. Only tapping Apply at the bottom of the window saves your changes to the order.
Q: I applied a coupon while editing an existing order and the discount looks too small. Is it broken?
A: No. While editing, the discount shown is calculated against the items you've just added; the receipt applies the coupon to the whole order, so the final amount can be larger than the preview suggests.
Q: What are the rules for a coupon code?
A: At least 5 characters, letters and numbers only — no spaces or punctuation — and it can't be the same as any other coupon's code (SUMMER10 and summer10 count as the same code). Tap the generate button next to the code field to build a valid one automatically from the coupon's name, its discount, and what it applies to.
Q: Can I limit a coupon to a set number of items on one check?
A: Yes — set "Positions per check" when creating or editing the coupon. It caps how many matching items on a single check the coupon can discount, so a "first two free" style offer never quietly covers a whole table's order. Leave it blank for no limit.
Q: A discount or coupon brought the total to zero — can the order still be closed?
A: Yes. The payment window still lets you finish it — it offers exactly one payment method (usually Cash) to confirm with, nothing is charged, and the order is marked paid and closed. See Orders.
Q: What does the "Client" badge on a card in the Cards list mean?
A: It means that card was issued for someone saved in Clients rather than standing on its own — its name, email, and phone came from that client's profile at the moment the card was issued. You can issue a card this way when adding a new client, or check whether a client already has one from their profile.
Q: Do I still need to search for a customer's loyalty card at the payment screen?
A: Not if you've already attached that customer to the order. Pick them from ⋯ More → Client on the register, and if they hold an active loyalty card, its discount is applied to the check right away — the payment window opens with it already in place. See Orders.
